Solving Math Problems
A Reference for Teachers by John R. Dixon
Published by John R. Dixon Books

For Math Educators
Middle, High School And College

• Over 200 solved problems are ready for classroom use

• Solutions explain each problem solving process clearly and completely

• Problems are organized into six classes for convenient selection by teachers

• Appendices on units, graphs, ‘per’ problems, and triangles

• Easier problems are included for teaching the problem solving processes thoroughly before advancing to the more difficult problems

• ‘Word’ problems of all types are solved by a single, generalized analysis process

• Use the book as teacher’s personal reference, as a library reference for students, as a text or reference for units on problem solving, or as the basis for workshops

• John Dixon is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education, Grades 5-12

Engineering Design and Design For Manufacturing, A Structured Approach
by John R. Dixon and Corrado Poli
Published by Field Stone Publishers

Text & Reference for Mechanical Engineers
Intended Use:This book is intended as a text for engineering students at the junior level or higher, and as continuing education and reference for engineering design practitioners in industry. Certain chapters, however, can be used in sophomore and freshman courses.
A Structured Approach:The book takes a structured approach to both design and design for manufacturing (DFM), including a careful vocabulary for describing both designed objects and design processes. Structure is important for students and entry level practitioners so they can better observe and understand the processes within which they are working. Structure helps new designers see the forest among the trees, branches and leaves, and it ultimately helps engineers advance the profession of design.
The structure: After engineering design is placed in its context within the product realization process, it is described in three overlapping stages: engineering conceptual design, configuration design (of parts), and parametric design. Each stage is defined in terms of the information describing and related to the designed object that is to be determined and decided upon in that stage. Issues of manufacturability are considered at every stage.
Structure is also provided by adherence to a single problem solving methodology called guided iteration. Guided iteration is presented as the synthesis process by which each of the three stages of engineering design is approached and resolved.

Design Engineering by John R. Dixon
Published by McGraw-Hill Book Company

Inventiveness, Analysis, and Decision Making
Engineering design is treated as problem solving. Three fundamental components of the design process - invention, analysis, and decision making - are placed in the context of the design process and then treated separately and in detail. There are example problems at all stages from the subject matter fields of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics as well as from the more traditional machine design areas.

Thermodynamics 1 by John R. Dixon
Published by Prentice-Hall, Inc.

An Introduction to Energy
Intended as a textbook for a first course in thermodynamics for mechancial engineers, this book first stresses the scientific development of the laws, and then applications. A problem-solving methodolgy is presented and illustrated throughout to assist student solving both textbook and real problems related to thermodynamics.

A Programmed Introduction to Probability by John R. Dixon
Published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

A Text Programmed for Self-Study
This program combines both linear and branched programming techniques, introduces the concept of probability, gives the rules of Bayesian probability and develops the facility for using the rules to solve problems. Such topics as decision theory, Boolean logic, and realiability are also introduced. The many exercises and example problems are selected to cover applications of probability to all fields of engineering. Statistical techniques are discussed, nor is the calculus employed.
